One experience in hypnosis therapy was all it took for New York native Alexandra Janelli to leave her environmental consulting career behind.
Janelli founded a practice called Theta Spring Hypnosis after moving to Chicago in 2010, inspired by a hypnotherapist she saw a few years earlier to address a finger biting habit and relationship issues.
“I was blown away by the experience that I decided it was something I wanted to learn more about,” she said via an email interview. “I ended up reaching out to my hypnotherapist to see how he became a hypnotist, and the rest is history!”
She enrolled in online classes at the Hypnosis Motivation Institute, the first nationally accredited hypnosis program, graduating in 2011.
In 2016, Janelli moved back to New York to open Modrn Sanctuary. It houses her hypnotherapy practice along with spas for skin, beauty and alternative wellness treatment.
This past year, Janelli shifted her practice to provide treatment virtually.
“While it is a bit different, it is just as powerful,” she said. “During this time, it has been a blessing to be able to work with clients to feel more comfortable.”
For her clients, hypnotherapy has tremendous benefits. Clients have overcome unhealthy romantic relationships, troubling fears, nervous habits, trauma and weight problems.
“One of the most rewarding things is that my practice helps people understand [who they are], how to release fear, and gain confidence,” she said.
Typically, clients need more than one hypnosis session to address their pain. While in a hypnotic state, clients are in total control of their thoughts, contrary to popular belief. Janelli merely serves as a guide in having her clients enter deep relaxation.
Every client responds differently to hypnosis. Some respond to direct commands, while others are better with metaphorical suggestions.
While hypnosis is effective in overcoming fear and trauma, it is up to the person themselves to overcome their issues.
“You would only be willing to do something if you have some desire to do it within you,” she said.
